An exciting year filled with new experiences, personal growth and professional development.
For both of our School Direct routes, you will spend one academic year working within two of our Federation schools as an integral member of the school team, developing your skills alongside experienced professionals while accessing additional support and mentoring from our subject experts and your designated in-school mentor.
You will spend four days per week gaining practical experience within one of our Federation schools. Upon first commencing the programme, Unsalaried trainees typically spend a large proportion of their time observing and supporting lessons before progressing to independent teaching. Trainees on the Salaried route will also spend time observing lessons but will move on to delivering their own activities and lessons sooner than Unsalaried trainees. On both routes, you will be supported in developing the skills fundamental to a career in teaching and encouraged to engage in every facet of school life, gradually taking on additional challenges and shared responsibility for pupils.
Your remaining day will be dedicated to study with our partner, Their award-winning blended learning programme will allow you to develop core professional and pedagogical skills while strengthening your subject knowledge. Your studies will predominantly be carried out on an innovative e-learning platform, through which you will gain 24/7 access to course materials, lessons and tutorials, making learning extremely flexible. You will also be able to participate in an exciting programme of face-to-face workshops and specialist teaching visits to contextualise your training and research.
All of our courses lead to QTS with the additional option of adding on a PGCE.
In order to obtain QTS, you will be required to complete two higher education assessments of upwards of 3,000 words throughout the year. Applicants on the PGCE route will need to complete three.
Typical assignment topics include:
- The Teaching of a Foundation Subject
- Technology Enhanced Learning
- Subject Knowledge Development
In addition to these formal assessments, you will continuously work on completing the tasks and objectives laid out in your Training Plan. This document will act as a structured record of your learning and professional development, providing evidential support for your application for QTS.
You will be provided with a range of high-level support throughout both of your School Placements to enable you to effectively learn about all aspects of teaching.
Each trainee is assigned an experienced in-school mentor who will act as your day-to-day point of support during the programme. Through weekly meetings and regular monitoring, your mentor will ensure that you have extensive opportunities to observe and explore teaching and learning, collaborate with expert colleagues and participate in other training experiences within your placement.
